Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be moving to a foreign country to live, let alone a country in the Middle East. Over the 2009 Christmas and New Year’s holidays, my husband Roger and I discussed what we wanted the next part of our life to be like. He thought that before retiring, he would like to do one more airport project but only if he could find something very interesting. I half-jokingly agreed that would be fine but could he try for an exotic location? As usual, Roger came through and soon we were headed to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. This blog is a recap of our "leap-of- faith" wanderings around the Middle East and beyond. We joyfully share these expat experiences.

Ramadan 2012 Adopt-A-Camp Project. . . Join me in a small act of charity

Please join me during the 2012 Ramadan holy season in a simple act of compassion to support the Adopt-A-Camp Care Package project.

The program will provide 5,000 large “care packages” of personal hygiene products, clothing, bedding and food items to help improve the lives of laborers, some who have been abandoned by their employers.

This effort is organized by the non-profit Adopt-A-Camp organization and the DubaiChamber of Commerce.

The goal is to raise enough money to cover the cost of 5000 pillows @ AED12.

If I can find 200 people to donate 300 dhs each ($80) we will succeed. Thank you for anything you can do.   Please feel free to ask your friends to help. Contact me email: katiefoster46@gmail.com or

Bed bugs and lice are a huge problem in the camps. Laborers return to camp after a long day of hard work only to be kept up all night scratching away. Part of our drive is to help the camps be bed-bug and lice-free by providing new mattresses and pillows, so the laborers can finally get a full night’s rest.

They say a peaceful night of sleep is the best gift we can give them…that and the knowledge that there are people out there who care.

The deadline to turn in the contributions is Tuesday, July 31. So if you are so moved to help those less fortunate than yourself, Theresa Dommett has volunteered to help me collect funds this year. Please contact one of us to make arrangements to collect your donation.

Volunteer to help assemble the care packages. On Thursday, August 9, starting at 9pm you are invited to help assemble the care packages at the Dubai Convention Centre.

When all packages are assembled, if you wish, you may assist with the distribution of the Care Packages directly into the hands of the laborers and see for yourself how you made a genuine difference. The entire process will be completed by 4:30 AM.

Supervised children are welcomed.

Believe me . . .  it is well worth the time and effort.
